The treatment

Colonic hydrotherapy, explained

Everything you would want to know before you book. What the treatment is, how to prepare, and how to look after yourself afterwards.

What it is

Gentle, warm and quietly effective

Colonic hydrotherapy is the slow, gentle introduction of warm, filtered water into the colon to soften and clear waste. I carry it out through a closed gravity system using sterile, single-use equipment, so everything is hygienic and discreet, with no mess and no odour.

Every session begins with a consultation. I review your health history and how you have been feeling, and only then begin the treatment itself, which takes around 30 to 45 minutes. As part of the treatment I often use some gentle abdominal massage to help the water work and to ease any tightness. It is always light, and if you would rather I left it out, you only need to say so. You are covered throughout, and I adjust everything to your comfort as you go.

In some cases, and only where it is right for you, I may suggest adding a herbal or coffee enema as part of your treatment. This is always tailored to your individual needs and talked through with you first, and it is never something I do without your agreement.

Most people describe feeling lighter, clearer and brighter afterwards. Many find their digestion settles into an easier rhythm over the following days.

Before your visit

How to prepare

Nothing drastic is needed. A few small choices in the day beforehand help the treatment work at its best.

  • Eat lightly on the day

Soups, steamed vegetables, fish or eggs are ideal. Try to leave a couple of hours between your last meal and your appointment.

  • Drink plenty of water

Being well hydrated in the day or two beforehand makes the treatment gentler and more effective.

  • Skip alcohol for 24 hours

Avoid alcohol for the day before your session, and go easy on caffeine, red meat and anything you know leaves you bloated.

  • Do not overthink it

There is no need to fast or do anything drastic. Come as you are and I will take care of the rest.

After your session

Looking after yourself afterwards

The treatment carries on working gently after you leave, so give your body an easy day.

  • Take the day gently

Most people feel light and clear afterwards. Give your body room to enjoy that rather than rushing back into a heavy day.

  • Keep the water coming

Carry on drinking water, and choose warm, simple food for your next couple of meals. Soups and broths are perfect.

  • Hold off the alcohol and fizz

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours afterwards, and let fizzy drinks and rich, heavy meals wait until tomorrow.

  • Expect a gentle settling

A little change in your digestion over the following day or two is completely normal as your system finds its rhythm.

Important to know

When colonic hydrotherapy is not suitable

Colonic hydrotherapy is safe for most healthy adults, but it is not appropriate for everyone. Please do not book a session if any of these apply to you.

  • You have an inflammatory bowel condition in flare, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
  • You have had recent abdominal or bowel surgery
  • You have a severe heart or kidney condition
  • You have a current infection or fever
  • You are pregnant

If you are simply not sure, speak to your GP first. I review your health history at your consultation before any treatment goes ahead, and I will never proceed with a session that is not right for you.

Questions

Asked before every first visit

Does colonic hydrotherapy hurt?

It should not. You may notice unfamiliar sensations and the occasional mild cramp as water moves through, but the treatment is gentle and I will adjust the flow to your comfort throughout.

How long does a session take?

Allow around 75 minutes for your first visit, which includes a full consultation and health history. The treatment itself takes around 30 to 45 minutes.

Will there be any massage during the treatment?

There may be. As part of your session I sometimes use some gentle abdominal massage to help the water move and to ease any tightness. It is always light and I will check that you are comfortable first. If you would prefer none at all, simply let me know and I will happily do without it.

Is it hygienic?

Completely. I use a closed gravity system with sterile, single-use equipment for every client, in line with ARCH professional standards.

Will my dignity be protected?

Yes. You are covered throughout, the room is private, and the closed gravity system means there is no mess and no odour at any point.

Can I eat before I come?

Yes. Eat normally but lightly, and try to leave a couple of hours between your last meal and your appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

It genuinely varies. Some people feel the benefit they wanted after one session, while others choose a short course. I will give you an honest recommendation at your first visit, never a hard sell.
